If you are in a bar and you see someone across the room holding up her right hand and pointing to places on the palm, you know she's from Michigan.

Michigan is shaped like a mitten, and everyone from Michigan knows where they live in relation to this mitten. They'll say 'he's up in the thumb' or 'that's just by the little finger'.
